the Lord promises to take upon himself the covenant curse if the covenant is broken. The curse is not stated but is symbolized by the fate of the animals that have suffered death. So by taking the vassal’s place in the ceremony, the Lord promises to take the punishment of death upon himself if the Abrahamic covenant is broken by Abram or his offspring.
